Silk Way Weekly: Female employees of local clinics and health centers in Kandahar have been subjected to a new mandate by the Taliban’s Vice and Virtue Promoters. According to a credible source within the Taliban-run Public Health Department, female health workers were instructed on Sunday that they are prohibited from going to work without being accompanied by male guardians, known as “mahram.”

This verbal order underscores the Taliban’s growing restrictions on women’s rights in the region. In addition to barring women from working with national or international Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), the Taliban government has now extended their control to local healthcare facilities. While the Taliban has permitted female health workers to continue their work with NGOs, this latest directive curtails their ability to carry out their vital roles independently.

The imposition of such regulations on female health workers raises concerns about gender equality and access to healthcare services in Kandahar. Human rights advocates and medical professionals are closely monitoring the situation as these restrictions further limit women’s participation in the workforce and adversely impact the provision of essential healthcare services to the local population.
