Afghan Refugee Students Facing Serious Challenges in Iran

Esmat Altaf

We are just approaching the end of summer holidays of the schools and universities in Iran and once again education of Afghan refugees has occupied the mind of the families. Those Afghan students who have come to Iran have not been registered and enrolled to schools yet. This is the specific issue of those families who fled Afghanistan after the Kabul fall and come to Iran. Those families who had already come to Iran and are living legally in Iran do not have such problems.

Education of Afghan students have witnessed many ups and down in the past. Afghan students were not enrolled in the system now and then, but the problem was solved in one or another way. Now, only three weeks is left to the new year in Iran, and many Afghan refugee students do not know whether they will be enrolled to the system or not. These students hope the officials of the Islamic Republic of Iran to take a decision to allow them to study in the country.

When the republic collapsed on 15 August 2021, many families left Afghanistan either for political reasons or economic reasons. These families fled Afghanistan and went to the Afghanistan neighboring countries, especially Iran. They left Afghanistan to save their lives and left nearly all their belongings. Those Afghans who left Afghanistan after the Kabul fall and went to Iran have been counted and have been estimated around 2.5 million people. Then they were given census sheets in order their legal residence to be paved in Iran. However, their children have not been enrolled in Iranian schools yet and even they do not know whether they will be enrolled in the new educational year or not.
