Jade-Abresham(Silk Way): Amnesty International asked the Taliban to release immediately Ajmal Haqiqi the Afghan YouTuber and his colleagues. “Taliban create a fearful environment through illegal detentions to make the people silent.” Samira Hamidi the Amnesty International activist said. “Taliban have harassed and have treated violently the human rights activists, women rights activists, journalists, academics and etc.” She said. “Taliban as the governing body must respect the international human rights laws and respect the freedom of speech indiscriminately.” She added.
On 7 June 2022, the Taliban’s General Directorate of Intelligence arrested Ajmal Haqiqi and three of his colleagues on charges of “insulting Islamic sacred values”. Later in the day, a video ‘confession’ of Haqiqi was released where he again apologized. Amnesty International says that the AI has documented illegal detentions of the Taliban after 15 August 2021, which later has forced the people to confess or issue statements as they have been guilty. Amnesty International says the Taliban have restricted the freedom of speech fearing the criticism of their government and they have suppressed journalists and critics.
The human rights situation of Afghanistan is in the worst conditions after less than a-year Taliban seized Kabul. People in general and women specifically have been deprived of their basic rights including the right to service, labor, education, access to information, and free movement in public spaces. The activities of mass media have been directed in a specific direction due to limitations imposed on them in order not to cover human rights violations, crimes against humanity, and suppressing the people. Mass media and civil society activists can’t express the current social facts due to fearing detention or being tortured by the Taliban.
