Dialogue in the First Act

By: Dehqan Zahma
Common man: It’s a pity, it’s a pity. We would not have been here if the foreigners had not interfered in our internal affairs. First England, the Russia and the US. We are ruined.

Historian: Yes, the foundation of this country is broken. A buffer state between Tsarist Russia and British India in the 19th century, we later became victims of the Cold War. Mohammad Zaei’s family was able to sow the seeds of hypocrisy. Fascist quest for superiority of the uncultured Pashtuns is the result of the rule of the Mohammadzai family. Pashtun has no good or bad. Pashtuns naturally seek superiority.

Common man: I don’t know about culture. Believe me! I have a Pashtun friend who is not a fascist at all and he even cried for killing the protestors of the Enlightenment movement.

Historian: He must have shed crocodile tears. I have tested them. All f them are fascist and racist.
But about the culture. Pashtuns are rootless. We are rooted in ancient civilizations: Ariana, Khorasan, Hafez and Ferdowsi. What do Pashtuns have?
The Ordinary man: There is no doubt about it.

Observer: Let’s go back to our main point: Afghanistan is in a bad geographical position from the point of view of geopolitics. But what was the role and internal factors that led us to these bad times?

The historian: The Foreigners are.

The Observer: People like Ashraf Ghani, Mohaqeq, Dostum, Atta Mohammad Noor or Khalili are not foreigners. We are not so unfortunate because we live in the West.

Historian: We are all miserable, because displacement is misery. Everyone knows Ashraf Ghani. He was a spy and servant of the US.

The Ordinary man: Yes, to be honest, it is hard to live away from home, but my life in the West is better than in Afghanistan. I was a cook at the British Embassy for a while and this job saved me.

Observer: Well, foreigners play an important role. You mentioned Ashraf Ghani, but you didn’t mention others. Most importantly: what is the role of foreigners in the lack of culture of Pashtuns and our culture?

Historian: It has historical roots. backward language and Kochi… (Nomad).

Common man: Pashtuns living in the city, all speak Persian and are interested in Hafez.
Historian: Yes, they have to, because Persian is a great language.

Observer: So, the Persian language is also related to the Pashtun culture. Why create a border for culture? Cultures are related to each other.

Historian: We have a ruling and condemned culture. Pashtuns tried to make their culture dominant, but our culture is proud enough, they have failed.

Common man: I said that I don’t understand anything about culture, but I must say that I know a person who became rich through business and today he speaks not only English and French, but also Japanese. But I know a writer and poet who has no bread to eat.

Observer: Maybe because culture does not bring bread. But you can see that wealth, especially when combined with power, breeds culture.
